John Godbold, Managing Director of Ashe says when handling delicate filmic materials, accurate control is a prerequisite for success. For instance: to low a web tension may cause scratch marks or web slips leading to web overlap when slitting. On the other hand, too high a tension threatens the integrity of the material being wound, leading to web breaks or stretching.

Constant unwind tension is imperative to ensure good slitting and tracking. Accurate and stable tension is also critical for rewinding, so as to facilitate the rewinding of narrow reels and thus avoid telescoping or crushing. To achieve the required stability necessary for precise web control the Sapphires are equipped with automatic tension control; programmable through the multipad pneumatic brake or driven unwind.

Integral to the Sapphire is the Ashe HUG DRUM. This is driven by the isolation drive and prevents creasing due to web slackness as the aterial passes through the infeed zone. The Sapphire also has the Ashe differential SLIP-LOC control system fitted to ensure precise tension is maintained on each slit re-wound reel. The SLIP-LOC is automatically controlled along with driven movement of lay-on, enabling this system to act as lay-on, lay-off, or minimum gap winding mode.

The Ashe software technology involved in managing operating parameters has been provided in an operator friendly mode so as to facilitate the production of top quality finished rolls with minimal waste and downtime. PLC algorithms are used to monitor and check unwind and rewind diameters precisely. In addition the operator can take advantage of a wide range of software packages for use on the Ashe PC system.
